The
building's name dates back to the time of the South African
Union, which changed in 1961 to its current name, the Republic
of South Africa. Sir Herbert Baker was the architect of this 275
m long building, built in the English monumental style from
light sandstone. It is a majestic looking building, half-round
shape in shape with two wings at the sides representing the
Boer and English part of the population.

The
Voortrekker Monument bearing the inscription: "Ons vir jou,
Zuid Afrika!" (We for you, South Africa!) is a national
icon for Afrikaans South Africans. On the anniversary of the
battle at the Blood River, December 16th, Afrikaners
countrywide visit the Voortrekker Monument to commemorate what
they consider to be the most significant event in South Africa's
history. Precisely constructed, a ray of sunlight falls onto the
Shrine of Honor in the Heroes’ Hall only at 12 noon on the
16th December.
